Broncos Fall Short Against Central Michigan

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan's defense forced five turnovers and the Broncos got a gritty effort from senior running back Dareyon Chance, but it wasn't enough as WMU fell to Central Michigan, 27-22, in the Broncos' final home game of 2013. The rivarly was played in front of a crowd of 22,071, WMU's second largest of the season.

Western Michigan fell behind by two touchdowns in the first quarter, but rallied to score 16 unanswered points. The Broncos trailed 14-6 at halftime and led 16-14 with 7:37 left in the third quarter.

CMU pulled back in front on a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive late in the third and had WMU's Travonte Boles block the PAT. A pick-six on the first play of the Broncos' ensuing possession resulted in two touchdowns in a 15-second span for the Chippewas, as CMU took a 27-16 lead.

WMU continued to fight in the fourth quarter and a forced fumble by Cory Sueing at the CMU 19 gave the Broncos excellent field position. Sophomore quarterback Zach Terrell ripped off a career-long 18-yard scramble and Brian Fields punched in a one-yard touchdown run to bring Western Michigan within five, 27-22.

The Bronco offense settled under center for a final time with 6:29 left in the game and worked their way 55 yards down the field. The drive stalled however on the CMU 26-yard line. The Chippewas took over on downs and ran out the clock for their first win over Western Michigan since 2010.

WMU's Chance totaled 98 yards on 14 rushing attempts and had one touchdown. He had a season-long run of 29 yards and averaged 6.6 yards per carry. He picked up extra yardage several times with a strong second effort.

Chance also was the team's top receiver, hauling in two catches for 45 yards, including a career-long reception of 38 yards.

Boles, a fellow senior, also made the most of his final game at Waldo Stadium. In addition to the blocked PAT, he had an interception - which led to a Bronco field goal in the second quarter, one pass breakup and six tackles.

Junior safety Justin Currie was a defensive force as well, recording a sack, an interception and forcing a fumble. He and senior linebacker Johnnie Simon tied with a team-high 10 tackles.

Senior safety Demetrius Pettway also intercepted a pass in the third quarter. As a team, Western Michigan had a season-high three interceptions and recovered two fumbles.

Terrell passed for 147 yards, completing 14 of 35 attempts. Sophomore kicker Andrew Haldeman made three field goals before missing a fourth in the fourth quarter.

Western Michigan travels to Northern Illinois for its season finale next Saturday. The game will be aired on ESPN2. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET.
