The Broncos played even with Ball State during the first and fourth quarters, but the Cardinals scored three unanswered touchdowns in the middle two quarters.
Chance carried the ball 14 times, and had explosive runs of 49 and 43 yards. The 49-yard run in the first quarter was a career long and helped set up WMU's first score as the Broncos took a 3-0 lead on a 41-yard field goal kick by sophomore
Andrew Haldeman.
The Cardinals tied the game five minutes later on a 37-yard field goal by Scott Secor. For the second time this season, Ball State was held without a touchdown in the first quarter. BSU entered the game leading the Mid-American Conference and ranking 12th in the nation in passing offense.
The Cardinals pulled in front on a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, a 38-yard TD run by Horactio Banks and 42-yard pass from Keith Wenning to Jamill Smith, to lead 17-3 at the break. BSU stretched its advantage to 24-3 in the third on a 27-yard strike from Wenning to Willie Snead.
The Broncos followed with an 86-yard drive in the third and on fourth and six from the Ball State seven decided to go for it. Terrell fired a dart across the middle but his pass to
Timmy Keith was broken up from behind.
Western Michigan continued to battle and pulled within two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter. Terrell completed six passes on a 13-play, 80-yard drive. Facing another fourth down in the red zone, Terrell lofted a touchdown pass to Davis at the back pylon on fourth and four from the eight to cut the deficit to 24-10.
Ball State responded to the Bronco score with a pair of touchdowns, the first a two-yard throw by Wenning to Zane Fakes and the second a 25-yard TD run by Jahwan Edwards.
Western Michigan came up with a final score in the final minute of the game.
Keion Adams sacked and forced a fumble on BSU backup quarterback Ozzie Mann.
Ronald Zamort scooped up the loose ball and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. It was WMU's first fumble return for a touchdown since Sept. 22, 2012.
WMU racked up 368 yards of total offense, while Ball State had 483. Terrell completed a career-long 42-yard pass to Davis and was 19-for-34 through the air. Davis registered his third career 100-yard receiving game.
Defensively,
Mike Jones had a team-high 11 tackles for Western Michigan, and
Trevor Ishmael and
Kyle Lark each had nine stops apiece.
Donald Celiscar had eight tackles, two pass breakups and an interception.
Ball State's Wenning finished with 324 yards in the air and three touchdowns, becoming Ball State's all-time leader in touchdown passes with 75. The Cardinals improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the MAC with the win.
