Broncos Suffer 2-1 Loss at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio- Despite controlling the game statistically, Western Michigan men's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision on a rainy evening Friday at Bowling Green. The Broncos slip to 7-3-2 overall with the loss and 0-1-1 in the Mid-American Conference.

For the match, the Broncos had a 20-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 margin in shots on goal, and had five corner kicks to the Falcons' two. Both of the Falcons' shots on target, however, found the back of the net.

Bowling Green's Danny Balradi gave BGSU a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute with a goal off a free kick from 25 yards out. Balradi lined up on the right side of the pitch, and the ball skipped off of the wet turf and past Western Michigan goalkeeper Sean Lewis into the net. Lewis was shaken up on the play and had to leave the field, being replaced by Adriano Deabreu.

WMU tied the game 34 seconds later, when Jason Grant notched his second goal of the season off an assist by Shane Lyons. The Broncos' goal also originated off a free kick, when the Falcons were whistled for an infraction on WMU's half of the field. Darren Jones sent a booming free kick to the other end of the field and Lyons got his head on the ball, flicking it on to Grant for the finish. Lyons has now recorded at least one point in five straight games.

The contest remained deadlocked until Bowling Green's Anthony Grant came up with the eventual game-winner in the 76th minute. The Falcons were awarded a free kick near midfield and Balradi sent a ball into the box. Zach Lemke headed the ball backwards to Grant who cleaned up on the back post.

The loss snapped a five-game winning steak for Western Michigan against the Falcons. With the victory, BG improved to 4-5-2 overall 1-2-0 in MAC play.

Western Michigan looks to rebound Sunday, hosting Florida Atlantic at noon in conference play.
