WMU-CMU Post-Game Notes

Pregame

  • WMU leads the all-time series 43-35-2. 

  • CMU has won the last five meetings of the series. Last WMU win came in 2005, the longest active stretch of losses against any one team in the MAC. 

  • WMU is 28-33-1 all-time in MAC openers, including a 4-2 mark under head coach Bill Cubit. A victory today would give Cubit his 30th career win in MAC play. 

  • This is the first time the two teams have met in a MAC opener since Sept. 24, 1983. 

  • The home team has won 17 of the last 21 games in the rivalry. 

  • This year's meeting between the Broncos and Chippewas will be aired on the ESPN family of networks for the fifth time in the last six years. 

  • The "Battle for the Cannon" is in its fourth year and began as a competition between the respective student governments at the two schools. 

  • John Potter carries a streak of 78 consecutive PATs made into today's contest. Potter will also be looking to add to his school-record of 30 tackles by a kicker. Potter is the reigning MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week. 

  • Alex Carder is two TD passes from tying Jeff Welsh for sixth all-time in WMU history. 

  • Jordan White needs nine receptions to pass Juan Nunez for fourth in school-history. 

  • Four former WMU coaches are currently coaching for CMU: head coach Dan Enos, offensive coordinator Mike Cummings, special teams coordinator Kyle Nystrom and defensive coordinator Joe Tumpkin. 

  • CMU is looking to open MAC play with a win for the seventh time in eight seasons. 

  • All fans are being encouraged to wear gold for the game; fans wearing gold will be eligible to win prizes, courtesy of Meijer. 

  • Maggie's Catering is offering its breakfast stew to the first 1,000 students through the gate. 

  • White, Aaron Winchester and Freddie Bishop game captains for WMU.

  • Joe Kinville, John Williams, Cody Wilson and Ryan Radcliff are game captains for CMU. 

First Quarter

 

  • Coin toss by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, won by WMU and deferred to second half. 

  • First career start for Devon Brant

  • Career-long 24-yard reception by Brian Fields

  • Carder's touchdown pass to White is White's 16th career TD catch, tying him with Bob Phillips for 8th in school history. First TD of season for White. 

  • This is the third consecutive game in which WMU has scored first and the third consecutive game WMU has scored on its first possession. 

  • Potter's 79th consecutive made PAT gives him 239 career points, tied for 2nd in career  points by a kicker and fifth in career points by a Bronco (Mike Prindle).

  • Career-long 64-yard punt return by White. Previous long was 40-yards (Miami, 2009). 

  • Carder's TD pass to Chleb Ravenell is the first of Ravenell's career and gives Carder 34 career TD passes, tied for sixth in school history with Jeff Welsh. 

  • First one-play scoring drive of the season, and first since Nov. 13, 2010 (Eastern Michigan). It is the 72nd one-play scoring drive in program history. 

  • Potter extends consecutive PATs made streak to 80 and moves him into second in school history in career-points by a kicker and fifth in career-points by any Bronco. 

  • First career pass break up by Donald Celiscar forces a turnover on downs by CMU. 

  • First career rushing attempt by Dervon Wallace

  • Longest reception of career for Ansel Ponder (38 yards).

  • Antoin Scriven's one-yard TD rush is his fifth-career TD and the third consecutive game in which Scriven has scored. Scriven has three TD's this season. 

  • Potter converts his 81st consecutive PAT.

  • WMU has not allowed a first quarter score by the opposition in any of its three games this season. 

  • WMU is 1-1 when leading after the first quarter this season. 

Second Quarter

  • First career pass break-up for Winchester. 

  • New career-high in tackles for Brant. 

  • First career forced fumble by Winchester on his first career sack. First career fumble recovery for Brant. 

  • Season-high in tackles for Demetrius Pettway

  • Clark Mussman ties career-high with second reception. The 9-yard reception is his longest of the season. 

  • White's 17-yard reception gives him 190 career receptions, tying him with Juan Nunez four fourth all-time at WMU.

  • Potter now 3-4 in field goal attempts this season after a 33-yard make.

  • First time WMU has held a team scoreless in the first half since the 2010 season finale at Bowling Green. 

  • Carder with a new season-high rushing yards. 

  • WMU is 1-0 when leading at the half this season. 

Third Quarter

 

  • Forced fumble by CMU's Joe Kinville recovered by Jahleel Addae in the end zone. First forced fumble of season for Kinville and first fumble recovery of season by Addae.  Second fumble recovery for a TD by an opponent against WMU this season. 

  • White's ninth catch gives him 191 career receptions, passing Juan Nunez for fourth all-time in school history. The 43-yard reception is a season-long. Longest play from scrimmage by WMU this season. 

  • White now third in school history with 13 games of 100-plus yards receiving. 

  • New season-high in rushing attempts for Carder. 

  • Rushing TD by Carder is his seventh career and first of season. 

  • Potter's PAT extends his streak to 82 consecutive makes. 

  • Forced fumble by Winchester is his second of the game. First career fumble recovery for Chris Prom.  

  • New season-high in receiving yards for White. 

  • TD reception by White is is 17th career, tying him with Jamarko Simmons for 7th all-time. 

  • With the TD pass, Carder ties Norm Harris for fifth in school history with 35 career TD passes. 

  • Potter extends consecutive PATs made streak to 83. 

  • Season-long 5-yard punt return by Robert Arnheim

  • Carder with his fifth-career 300-yard passing game, tying him with Jeff Welsh for third in school history. 

  • Kinville with his first interception of season for CMU. 

  • First sack of season for Drew Nowak. Third career sack for Nowak. 

  • Second turnover on downs forced by WMU.

  • First reception of season for Blake Hammond

  • WMU is 1-0 when leading after three quarters this season.

Fourth Quarter

 

  • New season-highs in receptions and yards for Arnheim. 

  • Season-long 43-yard field goal for Potter, who is now 2-2 from the 40-49 yard range this season. 

  • The 34-point lead is a season-high for WMU.

  • The last time WMU scored 40-plus points against CMU was the 2003 matchup, won by WMU 44-21. 

  • New career-high in tackles for Winchester and Rontavious Atkins

  • Nowak with a new season-high in tackles. 

  • 28-yard TD run by Tim Phillips snaps seven consecutive quarter streak in which the WMU defense did not allow an offensive TD. 

  • Potter now a perfect 3-3 from 40-plus yards this season, hitting a second 43-yard field goal. This is the third time in Potter's career he has hit three field goals in a game. Potter's 14 points in a game today are the fourth-highest in a game by a Bronco kicker.

Postgame

 

  • WMU snaps five-game losing streak to CMU.

  • Cubit earns his 30th career MAC victory, fourth all-time in WMU history. WMU now 5-2 in MAC openers under Cubit. 

  • WMU wins the "Battle of the Cannon" for the first-time since the trophy's inception. 

  • Season-high 26,674 in attendance at Waldo Stadium.  

  • Touchdown-run by Tim Phillips in the fourth quarter snaps a seven consecutive quarter streak in which the WMU defense had not allowed an offensive touchdown. 

  • With five made PATs and three field goals, Potter finished with 14 points, tied for fourth in a game in school history. Potter has now made 83 consecutive PATs. Potter has now hit three field goals in a game three times in his career.  

  • White moves into fourth-place in WMU history with 195 receptions. White also now tied for seventh in school history with 17 TD receptions (Jamarko Simmons). White also set a career-high with a 64-yard punt return. 

  • Carder with his fifth game of 300-plus passing yards, tying him for third in school history (5- Jeff Welsh). Carder also ties Norm Harris with 35 career TD passes, good enough for fifth in school history. Career-high tying 15 rushing attempts for Carder.

  • WMU has now scored on its first possession in three straight games. 

  • WMU has not allowed a first quarter score by an opponent this season. 

  • Scriven now with a three-game TD streak. 

  • Winchester with a career-high in tackles (8) to go along with his first two career forced fumbles and first career sack. 

  • Nowak with a new career-high in TFL and a season-high in tackles (7). 

  • New career-highs in tackles for Simon (10), Brant (5), Atkins (2) and Trevor Ishmael (2-ties previous high). First career tackle for Manny Diaz

  • Drake with a new career-high in rushing attempts (12). 

  • Season-highs in receptions (5) and yards (71) for Arnheim.
