Broncos Top 2010 College Cup Participant Michigan, 3-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan men's soccer teams fantastic spring season continued Saturday, April 2 with a 3-2 victory over 2010 College Cup participant Michigan.

With the stunning victory the Broncos improved their spring record to 6-1 and also were crowned the champions of the inaugural "Michigan Challenge Cup," a spring tournament involving all five Division I men's soccer programs in the state of Michigan.

The Brown & Gold took the lead in the 15th minute when striker Shane Lyons powerfully headed home Kai Mendes' perfect cross. Michigan striker Noble Sullivan would equalize in the 31st minute when a collision between two Western Michigan defenders and goalkeeper Sean Lewis left Sulliavn with an empty net to score into.

Mendes regained the lead for the Broncos again in the 38th minute, latching onto Oliver Mayer's neat flick before smashing a 30-yard thunderbolt that arrowed into the top corner of the Wolverine net.

Mendes and Mayer combined for what would prove to be the game-winner in the 75th minute when a Mendes corner fell at the feet of Mayer eigh yards from goal and the impressive winger blasted home to make the score 3-1.

Michigan made a real match of it in the 84th minute when Zeke Harris reduced the deficit to one goal, finishing well on a 1 v 1 break away but the Broncos held on for the remainder of the match to complete the memorable victory.

Next up for the Broncos is a game next weekend against the WMU Alumni, scheduled for 2 p.m. at Waldo Stadium.
