DETROIT - Western Michigan and Purdue football took time this morning to serve breakfast to the needy at the Detroit Masonic Temple.
The Detroit Masonic Temple is only approximately three blocks from the Motor City Hotel where the Broncos are staying in preparation for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl but it is a world away from what these student-athletes experience on a daily basis.
The senior classes and head coaches from both football programs served breakfast this morning, giving back to those less fortunate than themselves. As it was mentioned during the morning, this is a small chunk of time out of these young men's day but it makes the day of those are benefited by it.
Upon arrival, the teams were given instructions and then it was into the kitchen to load up their arms with plates of food to serve to the people in attendance. The players and coaches mingled with everyone and spread holiday cheer.
Western Michigan makes it a point to continue to be a strong presence in the community no matter whether it is in Kalamazoo or anywhere. It is important and under head coach Bill Cubit, the Broncos have collectively amassed over 10,000 hours of community service.
Today was special for everyone involved and the saying, "It is better to give than receive," was never more present than at the Detroit Masonic Temple at 7 a.m., on Christmas morning.
