WMU vs. Akron - Post-Game Notes

Pregame

 

  • WMU leads the all-time series against Akron 12-4, including an 8-2 mark at home. 

  • WMU will honor the 20 members of its senior class before today's kickoff. 

  • WR Jordan White enters the game tied with Greg Jennings for most TDs in a season with 14. 

  • With a victory, WMU would have its 11th perfect season at home in school history and third under Bill Cubit

  • K John Potter carries a streak of 117 consecutive PATs made into today's action. 

  • QB Alex Carder has thrown for 400 or more yards in three straight games. 

  • WMU game captain is White.

  • WMU wins the toss and defers to the second half. 

 

 

First Quarter

 

  • First start of the season for DT Weston Peiffer

  • Second career forced fumble for Drew Nowak. First career fumble recovery for SS Trevor Ishmael. Nowak also gets credited with the sack, giving him 7.5 on the season.

  • Tyler Van Tubbergen with his first career start at QB. This breaks a streak of 23 consecutive starts by Carder. 

  • White with his 15th TD of the season, breaking the previous record held by Jennings (2003 and 2005 seasons). The TD is the 30th of White's career. He is one of only two Broncos to accomplish that feat in school history, the other being Jennings. 

  • The passing TD is the second of VanTubbergen's career. 

  • Potter with his 118th consecutive PAT made. 

  • Robert Arnheim with his fourth career completion, a 24-yard pass to White. 

  • Potter with a 26-yard field goal make. Potter has now connected on 15-of-21 field goal attempts this season. 

  • The safety by Akron's James Harvey and Manley Waller is the first safety against WMU since 2007, which also came against Akron. 

  • Nowak with a new career-high TFL.

  • WMU is 4-2 when leading after the first quarter. 

 

 

Second Quarter

 

  • Zips K A.J. Fox now a perfect 8-for-8 on field goal attempts this season after a 28-yard make. 

  • Career-long 56-yard yard by Dervon Wallace

  • VanTubbergen's 9-yard TD pass to Chleb Ravenell is VanTubbergen's second TD pass of the game, the first game in which VanTubbergen has thrown multiple TDs. 

  • WMU now has 13 scoring drives that have chewed up under a minute of game clock. 

  • Potter with his 119th consecutive PAT converted. 

  • Career-long 27-yard rush by White. 

  • Scriven ties a career high with two receptions. 

  • VanTubbergen's 40-yard TD pass to White gives VanTubbergen his first career three TD effort. The TD catch is the 31st of White's career, giving him 16 on the season.

  • Potter with his 120th consecutive PAT made. 

  • VanTubbergen with career-highs in completions, attempts and yards. 

  • First career forced fumble for Deauntay Legrier. Second fumble recovery of the game for Ishmael. 

  • First career TD pass for Arnheim comes on a 19-yard pass to Ravenell. Second TD catch of the game for Ravenell, his second two-TD effort of the season. 

  • The scoring drive is the second one-play scoring drive of the season for WMU, the 73rd in program history. 

  • Potter with his 121st consecutive PAT made. 

  • First-career TD catch for Eric Monette on a 36-yard bomb from VanTubbergen. First career four-TD effort for VanTubbergen. 

  • Third one-play scoring drive of the season for WMU, the 74th in program history. 

  • First time since 2005 (Central Michigan) that WMU has had two one-play scoring drives in one game. 

  • Potter converts his 122nd consecutive PAT. 

  • First-career rushing attempt for Josh Schaffer goes for 13 yards. 

  • VanTubbergen's two-yard TD pass to Dallas Walker is Walker's fourth-career TD reception. VanTubbergen with his first career 5-TD game. 

  • This is the first time since 2003 WMU has had two QB's throw for five or more touchdowns in a game. In 2003, Chad Munson threw for six TD's against William & Mary, while Jon Drach threw for five TD's against Central Michigan. In addition to VanTubbergen's five TD passes today, Alex Carder has thrown for five or more TD's twice (7-at Toledo, 5-at Connecticut). 

  • Potter with his 123rd consecutive PAT converted.

  • Rontavious Atkins with his second career interception. 

  • White with his 20th game of 100-yards receiving, the ninth time he's done so this season. 

  • The 40-point halftime lead is the largest of the season for WMU.

  • WMU is 5-2 when leading at the half. 

 

 

Third Quarter

 

  • VanTubbergen with a career-long 27-yard rush. VanTubbergen now with a career-high in rushing yards.

  • First-career rushing TD for VanTubbergen, an 8-yard score. 

  • Potter with his 124th consecutive PAT converted. 

  • Third fumble recovery of the day for Ishmael, tying the school record. The last Bronco to recover three fumbles in a game was Paul Johnson, who accomplished the feat against Northern Illinois in the 1988 season. 

  • First rushing attempt of the season for Aaron Winchester, who converted from running back 

  • First career TD catch for Matt Cutler. VanTubbergen with his first career game with six TD's. That is the second highest total in school history. Chad Munson has the only other six-TD game in school history, which came against William & Mary during the 2003 season. 

  • This is the first time in school history WMU has had two different QB's throw for six TD's in a game in the same season. 

  • Potter with his 125th consecutive PAT converted. 

  • Second forced fumble of the season for Paul Hazel. Second career fumble recovery for Keith Dixson

  • Mike Perish in at QB for WMU. 

  • First career rushing TD for Perish. 

  • Potter with his 126th consecutive PAT converted. 

  • First career completion for Perish. 

  • Troy Gilmer with a 72-yard fumble return for a TD, the first fumble returned for a TD against WMU since Dan Molls of Toledo (Nov. 8, 2011). 

  • White now second in MAC history in receiving yards with 3,922. 

  • WMU is 6-0 when leading after the third quarter. 

 

 

Fourth Quarter

 

  • Ben Armer's 66-yard punt matches a career-long. 

  • Ishmael with his first career sack. 

  • First safety for WMU since Johnnie Simon recorded a tackle in the end zone against Northern Illinois on Oct. 15. 

 

 

Postgame

 

  • VanTubbergen finished with 6 TD passes. This is the first time in school history WMU has had two different QB's throw for six TD passes in a game in the same season. 

  • Van Tubbergen with career-highs in completions (19), attempts (21), yards (252) and touchdowns (6). VanTubbergen also with career-highs in rushing attempts (7) and yards (60), as well as his first career TD. 

  • WMU completes it's 11th undefeated season at Waldo Stadium. This is the third time the Broncos have gone undefeated at home under Cubit (2006, 2008). 

  • White finished the game with 16 TD's on the season, a school record. White became the second receiver in school history to go over 30 TD receptions in a career (31). White is now second in MAC history in career receiving yards 3,922. 

  • Ishmael ties a school record with three fumble recoveries and records his first career sack. The last time a Bronco had three fumble recoveries in a game was 1988 (Paul Johnson vs. Northern Illinois). 

  • Nowak with a career-high 5.0 TFL, including two sacks. 

  • Potter has now converted 126 straight PATs converted. 

  • Seven different Broncos scored touchdowns in the game. 

  • Wallace with a career-high 79 yards rushing on a career-high four rushing attempts. 

  • The 49-point victory is the largest margin of victory for WMU this season. 

  • WMU had two one-play scoring drives in a game for the first time since 2005 (Central Michigan). 

  • First career TD catches for Cutler and Monette. 

  • Perish with career-highs in pass attempts (4), completions (10), and yards (42). Perish also with career-highs in rushing attempts (6) and yards (16). 

  • WMU scored 240 points in five home games this season, for a 48 points per game average.
