Potter Breaks Scoring Mark; WMU Sacks Miami, 24-21

OXFORD, Ohio - Western Michigan became bowl eligible for the fifth time under head coach Bill Cubit as the Broncos notched their sixth win of the year, beating Miami, 24-21.

Western Michigan racked up seven sacks for a combined loss of 45 yards with six of those sacks coming in the second half and three of them coming over a span of four plays.  Drew Nowak (2.5), Deauntay Legrier (2.0) and Johnnie Simon (2.0) each had career highs in sacks on the night.

One week after a well-listened to national radio show said that "defense was a rumor in the Mid-American Conference," Western Michigan totaled 11.0 tackles for a loss, four pass break ups and a pair of take aways against Miami.

The Red Hawks put up most of its offense in the first half with 284 yards and two scores in the first 30 minutes.  The second half was a different story.  WMU's defense stopped Miami on five of its six second half possessions, forcing a pair of punts sandwiched around an interception followed by a turnover on downs on a fake punt and another punt.

Donald Celiscar led all Broncos with 10 solo stops followed by Johnnie Simon with eight.  Simon now has 101 tackles on the year, making him the first Bronco to accomplish the feat since Louis Delmas had 111 in 2008.

Aaron Winchester had six stops a pass break up and his first career interception, playing safety in a game for the first time in his career.  When asked how he handled the transition and whether it was difficult, he answered simply, "It's football."

Offensively Western Michigan put up 471 total yards with 429 of that coming on the arm of Alex Carder, who had his third-straight 400-yard game and fourth of the season and threw three TDs in a game for the fifth time in 2011.  He now has 3,434 yards on the season and 28 TDs.

Carder had four receivers with 85 or more yards as Jordan White had 106 and two TDs on nine grabs and Chleb Ravenell hauled in eight catches for 110 yards.  Josh Schaffer answered his break out game at Toledo with a career high seven catches for 94 yards.  Robert Arnheim had eight catches for 86 yards and the Broncos third and decisive score.

White tied Greg Jennings for the most TDs in a season in WMU history, currently at 14 with at least one game more to be played.  He now has 120 catches, 1,508 yards and 14 TD catches, numbers that rank second, fourth and sixth in a season in MAC history.

Carder2White first scored from 19 yards out on a needle thread pass.  The TD answered Miami's score two minutes, 37 seconds into the second quarter.  It was the third time this season that both WMU and an opponent didn't score in the opening quarter (Connecticut, Eastern Michigan).

The second score was all White, hauling in pass at the two-yard line and muscling himself and two Miami defenders over the goal line for the six-yard score.  That score came at the 12:27 mark of the third quarter and gave WMU its first lead of the game.

The Broncos scored 17 straight points after Miami's second TD at the 4:21 mark of the second quarter.  WMU answered with a 35-yard field goal as time expired in the half.  It was Potter's 14th field goal of the year, but his night was highlighted by his first made PAT.

With Potter's 115th-straight PAT made, he scored his 308th career point, surpassing Brad Selent for the scoring title.  No one at Western Michigan has scored more points than Potter as he has 313 points, ranking ninth in MAC history.  His 87 points are not only a single-season personal best but also ranks third by a kicker in program history.

The three-point win may also have been in part due to Miami's inability to capitalize on its opening drive.  When the offense stalled at WMU's four-yard line, the Red Hawks were faced with a 22-yard chip shot, a chip shot that went wide right.

Western Michigan has a chance to end the season at 7-5 and will have that opportunity in the regular season finale against Akron on Nov. 25 at 1 p.m.  Tickets are available for $8.00 by calling 1-888-4-WMU-TIX or visiting www.wmubroncos.com/tickets.
