YPSILANTI, Mich. - Western Michigan football fought Eastern Michigan for 60 minutes at
Rynearson Saturday but was held out of the end zone twice on the same drive as
the Broncos fell to EMU, 14-10.
Trailing 14-10 with 7:40 to go in regulation, Western Michigan's
offense started its drive on its own 33-yard line. Alex Carder went deep to Chleb Ravenell for
32 yards to EMU's 35-yard line. After an incomplete pass to Tevin Drake and a
six-yard gain to the Eagles' 29, Eastern Michigan was flagged for pass interference
and unsportsmanlike conduct, putting WMU at EMU's seven-yard line with a first
and goal opportunity.
Carder rolled out and found Jordan White for a gain of two to the
five-yard line and Brian Fields ran up the middle for three yards to the
two. The Broncos rolled out on a pass to
the near side and Carder found Chris Prom for an apparent score but the replay
showed his knee hit down at the one before the ball landed on the goal line,
bringing up third-and-1. Western
Michigan went straight up the middle with Drake and EMU's defense was up to the
task, stopping the 210-pound sophomore short on another play that would be
reviewed and upheld.
Eastern Michigan took over at its own one-yard line and began to chew
up clock with runs to either end and up the middle. The clincher, on third-and-11 at its own 25,
came when Eagle QB Alex Gillett ran off tackle for 14 yards and the first
down. With WMU only holding one time
out, EMU was able to run out the clock for its first win over the Broncos since
2007.
Western Michigan took its only lead of the game on a 37-yard John
Potter field goal with 10:59 remaining in the game. It is the first time in Potter's career he has
made 12 field goals in a season and he is now 17-for-21 on field goals between
30-39 yards in distance.
Eastern Michigan went three-and-out on its next drive, giving the ball
back to WMU with 8:56 to go. The Broncos
knocked only 50 seconds off the clock as they went three-and-out. The Eagles landed the decisive shot 10
seconds later on Javonti Greene's 50-yard TD run.
Both of Eastern Michigan's scoring plays went for exactly 50 yards as
Gillett found Greene from midfield on a third-and-12 play at the 11:13 mark of
the second quarter. Western Michigan was
held scoreless in the first half of a game for the first time since the 2009
season opener at Michigan.
The Broncos forced EMU into a three-and-out on its opening drive of the
second half and having started the drive at their own 20 followed by a fumble
that pushed them back to the 13, the Eagles' punt of 42 yards set up WMU at its
own 45. After a Ansel Ponder zone run,
Drake went off left tackle for 46 yards and the game-tying score.
Drake's TD Run
Ravenell and White each had 70 yards receiving to lead the Broncos and
Drake had 48 yards rushing with all but two of that coming on his TD run. Defensively, the Broncos gave up 144 yards
passing to EMU, which was its fourth game with over 100 yards passing this
season. For the second week in a row,
the Broncos had three record 10 or more tackles with Johnnie Simon leading the
way with 11.
Simon also had 1.0 of WMU's 2.0
sacks on the day. Freddie Bishop had the
other. The Broncos had 9.5 tackles for loss
led by Bishop and Drew Nowak at 2.5 TFLs each.
Demetrius Pettway, who recovered a fumble for first time in his career, Mitch
Zajac also finished with 10 tackles.
Western Michigan heads back to Kalamazoo for its final Saturday home
game of the season when the Broncos host Ball State at 2 p.m. on Oct. 29.
