WMU vs. Toledo Post-Game Quotes
WMU Head Coach Bill Cubit
Thoughts on the game-
"The one good thing, the kids went out there and didn't
quit. We got it to seven with about eight minutes to go. With four minutes to go, we gave up a shot.
We couldn't run the ball, when you become one dimensional like this, you're not
going to win many games. Our tight ends didn't block very well, and when you
become like this, it's hard. They were exhausted. They played hard. There's not
much to say. We spent so much time this spring running it, and in the fall, and
it isn't going very well. You think it's working here and there, but when you
can't get a second and one and a third and one, it's discouraging, especially
when you have good field positioning."
Thoughts on quarterback Alex Carder -
"The one sack, in the second half, that's not his fault. The
first one, he needs to make a better decision there. The turnovers and
interceptions, you can't ask a sophomore to go in there and throw 64 times.
That's hard, it's a lot on his shoulder. He went out there and fought the whole
time. The guy's dog tired. He had to drop back too much, we didn't give him any
help. Again, the lost yardage plays, we gave ourselves no chance there. Even if
you don't turn the ball over, you have to work through it, but we were behind
21-0. We still got there, we were a touchdown down."
On running the ball-
"We ran the ball more in the spring and in the fall than
we've ever ran it. I have to go back and watch tape, some of it's just off the
edge, we're not getting any movement, we're not breaking anything. So, the only
time we ran the ball successfully is when we formation them, but that works
once or twice, but then they figure it out. It's just not going very well."
WMU Sophomore QB Alex
Carder
Thoughts on the game-
"Regardless of whether it's working or not, I need to do
better. If my team needs me to throw the ball that much, I need to do it and be
successful. From the bottom of my heart, I feel like I let my team down. Four interceptions is unacceptable, and I put
them in a tough spot. The blame shouldn't be put on anybody else."
WMU Senior WR Jordan
White
Thoughts on the game-
"Going off of what Alex said, our running game, we have to
reach the goals that we set. I think it's coming along, but like Alex said, if
we have to pass that much, us receivers have to make plays. There were some plays in the first half I
myself didn't make, and we put the defense in some bad situations. We need to
make plays on third down, and make it easier on the defense. We haven't put the
defense in a good opportunity."
WMU Sophomore LB Dex Jones
On the defense-
"I think we missed a couple big plays. This is college
football. The minor details will always be magnified. You have to be focused at
all times. It's repetitive, but a couple plays hurt us, and we have to get
better at defense for sure."
Toledo Head Coach Tim
Beckman
On the overall effort:
"It's still a little sloppy in some departments, but it's still a
'W' and it's still a road win. I think a lot of people doubted we could come in
and win two on the road. But we're still young, we still make a lot of
mistakes, but I'm proud of the way we played."
On starting 2-0 in MAC play:
"It feels pretty good. The reason why we're doing so good is that
we all go to class and learn about football and are not worrying about other
issues. It's all about playing football. They're studying the game and doing
those little things and that's why we're winning football games. It's a good
feeling that now we got four MAC games at home and the next three will be
pretty tough ones for us."
On the defense forcing six turnovers
"The credit goes to Paul Nichols and Michael Ward (co-Defensive
Coordinators). They did a good job. We had seven sacks and our defensive front
did a good job. The kids are playing hard, believing in the system, studying
film and learning what they're supposed to do."
On RB David Fluellen:
"David's earned the opportunity to carry the football. He had a
great preseason. He keeps getting better every time he touches the football."
