The Western Michigan football team completed its first week of the 2010 spring football season on Saturday morning. The Broncos practiced inside the Seelye Athletic Center, working on seven on seven drills and focusing on fundamentals as the team prepares for its first contact drill which will begin next week.
One area of concern when a team begins a spring season after having time off since the end of a football season is conditioning. Coach Cubit praised strength and conditioning coach Nate Peoples for the work he has done with the team in the weight room and in terms of cardio work to get the Broncos ready for the rigors of the spring work outs.
Also commenting on Saturday was junior receiver Robert Arnheim, who one year removed from his first full season as a wide out, is one of the more experienced receivers returing for the Broncos in 2010. He, Juan Nunez and Jordan White are the elder statesmen among the young corps of wide outs returing for Western Michigan.
Two newcomers are enrolled at WMU in order to participate in spring drills. Michael Lietdke and John Rice are on campus and getting early reps with their respective positional units.
Next week we will begin the video Q&As with the new members of the coaching staff and we will start looking at the three quarterbacks contending for the top spot come this fall.
