Broncos Win MAC Opener Over Florida Atlantic, 2-0

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- C.J. Brown and Ryan Symington each scored a goal to get Western Michigan off to a 1-0 start in Mid-American Conference play, as the Broncos recorded their first shutout of the season.

"This game just really showed that when everyone shows up and works hard, good things happen," WMU head coach Chris Karwoski said. "Our team has had some unfortunate and unlucky losses and has had to fight through injury, but we have never given up. We are 1-0 in the MAC right now. It's good to get a win today."

Brown's first goal of the season and eventual game-winner came 17 minutes into the game. Shaun Clements and Javier Jimenez started the attack, working the ball down the left sideline. The ball bounced loose in the box and Brown buried his shot into the top of the net from six yards out. Clements and Jimenez each were credited with an assist.

Symington added the insurance goal just minutes after the halftime break, scoring in the 47th minute. Gustavo Argueta brought the ball down the left sideline and flicked it on into the box, drawing out Florida Atlantic goalie Phillip Lamarre. Symington's initial shot was bobbled by Lamarre, but he was able to get a foot on the fumble, also netting his first goal of the season.

The two goals scored broke a four-game scoring drought for Western Michigan and snapped a seven-game losing streak. With the win, WMU improved to 2-7-1 overall on the year.

Freshman walk-on Paul Lewis earned his first career win in goal for Western Michigan in his second start, making five saves.

WMU took 12 shots and had five corner kicks. FAU totaled nine shots and had three corner opportunities.

The Broncos continue MAC play on Friday, playing at Buffalo at 7:30 p.m. The Brown & Gold then travel across town on Sunday to face Canisius at 1 p.m.
