VALPARAISO, Ind.- The Western Michigan men's soccer team (1-6-1) fell at Valparaiso Sunday afternoon, 3-0. The Broncos will look to pick up a win on Wednesday, hosting Michigan State at the WMU Soccer Complex at 5 p.m.
Steve Shively scored two goals to lead the Crusaders, netting one in each half. Shively's first strike came in the 40th minute, heading a ball into an open net after WMU goalkeeper A.J. Reed was drawn out of position. Jake Freisinger and Kyle Gentile recorded assists on the play.
Valparaiso got a second goal before the halftime break when Zack Stivers picked up a misplay out of the Bronco backfield and scored unassisted in the 43rd minute.
Shively registered his second goal in the 74th minute, and Valpo goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck recorded the assist. Zobeck booted a long punt and Shively was able to take the ball and go one-on-one with Reed, finishing to push the deficit to 3-0.
Valparaiso out-shot Western Michigan, 22-11. Tyler Rosenhagen and Dan Lewis led the Broncos with three shots each.
Freshman goalie Paul Lewis saw his first collegiate action, replacing Reed with 17 minutes remaining. He made two saves. Reed recorded five. Zoebeck made seven stops for the Crusaders.
