THREE RIVERS, Mich. -- The Western Michigan cross country team finished in second place at the George Dales Invitational, with Jennifer Roberts finishing third overall and was the top finisher for the Broncos at Pine View Golf Club on Friday evening.
Roberts finished with a time of 18:22.55, just one second behind second-place Natalie Webb of Eastern Michigan and nine seconds behind Amanda Rudert of Central Michigan in first place.
The Chippewas won the battle of the Michigan Mid-American Conference schools, finishing with 28 points. The Broncos finished with 44 points and Eastern Michigan right behind with 59.
"I thought we ran a smart race," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "We stayed in the pack and let Central lead but we just need to finish stronger. Central Michigan is one of the toughest teams in our region but I feel we did a good job."
Roberts broke Jill Odom's two-meet streak as the top finisher for WMU, although Odom was the Broncos' second finisher and took seventh place. Sophomore Samantha Draney finished in ninth place and was WMU's third finisher, while freshman Brittni Hutton was the fourth finisher and 11th overall. Jenna Matthews rounded out the Bronco top five and finished 14th overall.
