Broncos Beat St. Francis 3-2 to Win MSU/Radisson Fall Classic

Box Score

EAST LANSING, Mich.- Jordan Fylonenko scored two goals and Tyler Rosenhagen had a goal and an assist as Western Michigan picked up a 3-2 victory over St. Francis (Pa.) Sunday at the Michigan State/Radisson Fall Classic. Having also tied Vermont 1-1 on Friday, the Broncos were crowned winners of the four-team tournament, going 1-0-1 over the weekend.

Rosenhagen put Western Michigan up by one in the 16th minute, scoring unassisted from within the box. St. Francis tied things up before the half with a Patrick Fleming goal in the 29th minute.

WMU regained the lead thirteen minutes into the second half when Fylonenko scored his first of two goals, taking a midfield pass from Rosenhagen and beating Red Flash goalie Brad Williams.

Fylonenko struck again in the 63rd minute to push the Broncos' lead to 3-1. Sam Meyer and Andrew Gasiorek each got an assist on the goal. Meyer played the ball up the right side and Gasiorek served in a cross from the corner to Fylonenko who finished with a header. St. Francis scored on a header off a cross from the left side in the 86th minute to make the score 3-2, but the Broncos held on for their first win of the season.

"Our guys have really been playing some nice soccer," WMU head coach Chris Karwoski said. "We have had some defensive lapses, six minutes here and there, that we need to work on, but overall I think we have been pretty solid.

"Our back line played the whole weekend and did a nice job and our goalkeepers have been splitting time and its good that we can get them that experience. Guys coming in off the bench and the young guys have been productive too."

A.J. Reed played the first half in goal for the Broncos and made two saves. Peter Leonhard took over in the second period and made one stop.

Vermont upended Michigan State 2-1 in the second game to also finish with a 1-0-1 record for the tournament. Western Michigan won the tiebreaker over the Catamounts for the tournament victory with total number of goals scored over the weekend, 4-3.

Having played its first two games on the road, Western Michigan will open at home this upcoming weekend, hosting Eastern Illinois Friday at 4 p.m. and IUPUI Sunday at 1 p.m.
