KALAMAZOO, Mich. -?Three former Western Michigan football players are in the news this week. Jermaine Lewis of the Grand Rapids Rampage (Arena Football League) was recently named to the AFL All-Ironman Team, while Brad Selent and Chris Sheftic are playing for the Continental Indoor Football League championship on June 29.
Lewis was named to the prestigious squad on June 26 after setting career marks in receptions (40) and tackles (43.5) to rank fourth on the team. ?The former Bronco hauled in a career-best nine touchdowns, including a pair of key grabs in the Rampage's 86-70 playoff-clinching win over the New Orleans VooDoo on June 21. ?Along with the tackles, Lewis also had four pass breakups and an interception.
Grand Rapids will take on the Arizona Rattlers in the first round of the AFL Playoffs on June 30 at 9:30 p.m.
Selent and Sheftic will be competing for a title on June 29 at Wings Stadium when the Kalamazoo Xplosion takes on the Saginaw Sting in the 2008 CIFL Championship Game.
Selent, who is the team's leading scorer with 78 points in 14 games, nailed a 34-yard field goal in the conference championship before a pick-six put the Xplosion ahead for good, punching their ticket to the title game. ?The Paw Paw, Mich., native is WMU's all-time leading scorer and is starting to put his name in his new team's record book as well. ?He scored a record 10 points during a game with a pair of field goals and four extra points. ?He also booted a franchise-long 45-yard field goal. ?Keep in mind teams play on a 50-yard field in the CIFL.
Sheftic accounted for three tackles in the Xplosion's conference title game and will be playing for his first championship of any kind since leading Mendon High School to the Division Eight State Championship in 1999. ?Sheftic, in just his first season with the Xplosion has recorded 28 tackles in 14 games and intercepted a pass in back-to-back games. ?His first was a pick-six, going 10 yards for a score, and his second helped to keep Kalamazoo's opponent scoreless.
