BUFFALO, N.Y.- Freshman midfielder Dan Lewis scored his first collegiate goal just before the end of regulation to send Sunday's game at Canisius into overtime, but Western Michigan couldn't hold off the Griffs in extra play, falling 2-1.
Canisius took a 1-0 lead when Victor Gonzalez found Eddie Powell for a header off a free kick in the 30th minute.
The Griff's lead stood until just under five minutes left to play, when Lewis scored his first career goal to knot the score at 1-1. Trevor McEnroe recorded his first career assist on the play, sending the ball into the box. Lewis corralled the loose ball and beat Canisius goalkeeper Luke Seymour on the left.
Neither team came up with a goal in the first overtime, but the Griff's Brendan Brody scored 1:52 into the second overtime to lift Canisius to a 2-1 victory. Western Michigan was whistled for a foul outside its box and Alan McGreal directed the ball toward Brody, who headed it in.
WMU fell to 2-9-1 on the season, while Canisius improved to 4-6-1.
The Broncos will have a week of rest before they are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 12, traveling to Ann Arbor to face Michigan.
