KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Despite a valiant effort, No. 5 Akron was too much for the Broncos to handle as the Zips locked up the Mid-American Conference regular-season title with a 2-0 win over Western Michigan Saturday night.
Western Michigan fell to 3-12-1 overall, 2-2-0 in MAC play. Akron improved to 13-1-2, 5-0-0 MAC. Akron scored a goal in each half and stymied the Bronco offense on its way to its fourth consecutive conference title.
In the 18th minute Kofi Sarkodie hooked up with Ben Zemanski on a cross from the left side to put the Zips up, 1-0. Akron added an insurance goal in the 64th minute when Zemanski fed in a corner to Teal Burnbury, who buried the ball into the right post from 11 yards out.
Western Michigan will conclude the regular season with two home games, hosting Northern Illinois on Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex, then welcomes Hartwick on Senior Day on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
