KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan (3-11-1) scored first, but couldn't make its lead stand as the Bronco men's soccer team fell to Detroit, 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex. Shaun Clements scored the lone goal for WMU on a penalty kick.
Freshman Sam Meyer set up the penalty kick for the when he broke away and raced towards the goal with the ball unmarked. Titan goalie Bryan Kloss came off his line and took out the legs of Meyer, awarding the Broncos a penalty kick and also being cited with a yellow card on the play. Clements lined up for the PK and buried the ball in the lower right corner to give WMU a 1-0 lead 14:11 into the game.
Detroit (3-9-1) wasted little time answering, scoring just over a minute later when Renato Susnja finished Jake Muniando's free kick from six yards out at 15:33.
The score would remain tied 1-1 at the half. Detroit then used two second-half goals to pull away, the first coming at 46:43. A shot by Simon Zahra rang off the crossbar and Nick Dreshaj flicked on the rebound with his head. Adam Philip fought off the WMU defense in the box and scored off the rebound.
The Titans' third goal came at 68:24. Zahra served a corner kick from the right side and Renato Susnja helped the ball along to Ken Simon, who scored from six yards out.
Detroit outshot Western Michigan, 23-9, and placed nine shots on goal, while the Broncos managed just three. Sophomore A.J. Reed made five saves in goal for the Broncos, and the defense recorded one team save. Kloss made two stops for Detroit. The Titans also owned the advantage on corner kicks, 10-3.
Western Michigan will travel to nationally ranked Akron on Saturday, taking on the Zips at 7:30 p.m. The Broncos then return to Kalamazoo for their final two home games of the regular season, hosting Northern Illinois on Nov. 2 at 3 p.m., then Hartwick Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
