DAYTONA, Fla. - The Bronco golf team maintained its position at the Xavier
Invitational, held in Daytona, Fla., throughout the event, finishing
11th in the team standings. Elise Swartout and Britney Hamilton carded
a 1-over par 73 and 3-over par 75, respectively, to finish tied with
each other for 26th place in the 78-golfer field.
Swartout battled throughout the weekend, shaving strokes off her score as the rounds came and went. Her final round score of 73 is one stroke off her season-low round of 72, which shot in the opening round of the Mary Fossum Invitational two weeks ago. She has now posted a score of 77 or lower in seven of nine rounds this fall and leads the Broncos with a 76.2 per round average.
Hamilton is just 0.4 off Swartout's per round average at 76.6. She finished the Xavier Invitational with an aggregate score of 231 after her second-lowest round score of the fall season. She too posted an even-par round of 72 earlier this season with hers coming in the opening round of the Nittany Lion Invitational.
Leah Grawburg had her best finish of her young Bronco career, tying for 44th and carding a final round of 80 to finish eight shots behind Swartout and Hamilton.
Yale held off defending team champion Florida Atlantic University for the 2008 team title, besting the Owls by one stroke. The Bulldogs finished with at 902, followed by FAU (903) and WMU's Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan (905). FAU and Lamar both went below 300 in the final round, each postinig a team score of 299. It was Barry University that had the tournament's lowest team round, carding 295 on Sunday.
Western Michigan, which shot a final-round 313 as a team, will have a week off before competing at Pine Needles in an event hosted by Rollins College on Oct. 27-28.
