KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Bronco football coaching staff is now at full strength after Western Michigan announced the hiring of Scott Kavanagh as its new quarterbacks coach on March 29. Kavanagh, a four-year letterwinner at Wisconsin, comes to Kalamazoo after spending three seasons at Cornell.
Kavanagh served as the Big Red's quarterbacks coach during the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. During that time, Cornell had a signal caller earn First Team All-Ivy League honors for the first time in program history in 2005 and had another quarterback rush and throw for over 1,000 yards in the same season. In 2006, the Big Red's sophomore quarterback ranked 57th nationally in total offense in his first year as a starter.
Prior to coaching the quarterbacks, Kavanagh oversaw the Big Red's receiving corps during the 2004 season, coaching another All-Ivy League student-athlete in this unit as well. The 2001 Wisconsin graduate designed and compiled game breakdowns and scout tendency reports on the team and on each opponent. He also served as the program's junior varsity offensive coordinator, going 3-1.
Kavanagh moved to Ithaca, N.Y., from Madison, Wis., where he was an offensive graduate assistant for the Badgers from 2002-03. There he designed and compiled game breakdowns and scout tendency reports on the team and on each opponent as well as designed and compiled the offensive playbook.
The Naperville, Ill., native was a four-year letterwinner for Wisconsin and was a member of two Big Ten championship teams (1998 and 1999) and a pair of Rose Bowl championship teams (1999 and 2000). He ended his career with a 37-13 record under center (74.0 percent winning percentage).
Kavanagh earned his bachelor's degree in life sciences and communications in 2001 from Wisconsin and is currently working on a master's degree in education administration. He currently resides in Kalamazoo.
