Western Michigan Football Adds Three to Coaching Staff

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan University announced the hiring of three new coaches to its football program on Tuesday.  Bill Miller will take over as the Broncos' defensive coordinator; Peter McCarty will serve as WMU's defensive line coach and Bob Stanley comes in as the Brown & Gold's offensive line coach.

Miller has been a defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, Miami (Fla.), Nevada, Michigan State and most recently a two-year stint at Arizona State. He's also coached at Florida (associate head coach/linebackers), Minnesota (secondary) and Drake (secondary) during his nearly 30 years in the business.

“He's a good friend, but a great, great football coach,” Cubit said.  “He's about as knowledgeable (a defensive mind) as I've been around and the other thing is he's a South Florida recruiter.”

Stanley comes to Kalamazoo after spending one season at New Mexico.  Prior to his stint there, he spent three seasons at Kansas State under Bill Snyder where his offensive line helped pave the way to a No. 9 national ranking in rushing offense, a ninth-place finish in scoring offense and the No. 17 spot in total offense. The offense was one of seven in the country to average over 200 yards per game in both rushing and passing.

Stanley began his career in the high school ranks before moving on to coach at Texas A&M (1973-81), TCU (1982), Vanderbilt (1983-85) and Texas (1986).

McCarty joins Western Michigan after serving on George O'Leary's staff at Central Florida.  McCarty comes from Central Florida and has coached at Georgia Tech, as well as Stanford.  McCarty spent four seasons (1997-2000) as the defensive tackles coach at Illinois under Ron Turner. During his tenure, he helped the Fighting Illini to a victory in the 1999 Micronpc.com Bowl.

With the addition of McCarty, Tim Daoust will take over as the Broncos' secondary coach.  Western Michigan still has a vacancy at the quarterback coach position and it is a position Cubit intends to fill.  He will oversee this unit until a selection is made.

The trio joins Grant Heard as the newest members of the coaching staff.  Heard was hired as the Broncos' new wide receivers coach in February.

Miller was brought in to replace former defensive coordinator, Scott Shafer, who left for Stanford last month.  Former assistant Clayton White joined Shafer in Palo Alto, Calif., soon after, necessitating a need for McCarty.  Stanley replaced Mike Sullivan who took a post with the Cleveland Browns.
