KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Anthony Gebhart, a senior captain on the Western Michigan football team, became the seventh Bronco in program history to earn academic all-district honors in back-to-back seasons, earning First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors. Gebhart's nod makes it five-straight seasons the WMU football program has had at least one team member earn academic all-district honors and three-consecutive seasons during the Bill Cubit era.
Gebhart, an Addison, Ill., native was named team captain during the 2007 and has either led the team or has ranked in the top two in tackles on the year. He currently has 76 total tackles with 46 solo stops. The safety has a unit-best 5.0 tackles for loss and is the only Bronco with more than one interception on the season. Gebhart recorded his first pick of the year against Missouri and his latest against Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan.
Having made seven starts in 10 games this season, Gebhart has registered a pair of double-digit tackle games in 2007. He opened the year with a 10-tackle effort against West Virginia and followed up with a career-best 15 stops against Missouri. Both teams are now ranked seventh and sixth, respectively in the latest Bowl Championship Series (BCS) standings.
Recently, Gebhart has added his skills to the kick return game as he has returned three kick offs for 67 yards (22.3 yards per return) over the past two games. He had a career-best 51 return yards against Eastern Michigan.
Gebhart is an economics major with a 3.83 GPA. He joins Tony Scheffler (2004-05), Jason Feldpausch (2002-03), Tim Lester (1998-99), Scott Niles (1997-98), Rich Kaiser (1993-95) and Mike Gary (1982-83) as the only Broncos to earn academic all-district in consecutive years. Kaiser is the only member of this list to go on to earn Academic All-America (1994-95).
