CLEVELAND - Senior punter Jim Laney earned his second Mid-American Conference West Division Special Teams Player of the Week award after averaging 40.2 yards per punt on five punts in the Broncos' win against Temple in the season finale. Laney also ended the season sharing the record for average punt yardage in a season at Western Michigan with Adam Anderson.
The Toledo, Ohio, native booted five punts against the Owls, recording a game long 57 punt during the game. This was his 14th punt of 50 yards or longer this season, matching the most in a season for his career and giving him 34 punts of 50 yards or better in his career. Laney matched Adam Anderson's four-year old record of 43.9 yards per punt for a season.
Laney pinned inside the 20-yard line twice, marking the fifth game this season and third-straight time he has done so with more than one punt in a game. He also registered one touchback, giving him eight on the season, and two fair catches against Temple.
Laney shared this week's award with Northern Illinois' Andy Dittbenner. He also shared the MAC West Special Teams POTW award to start the season, sharing the honor with Toledo's Brett Kurn, a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, after he averaged a season-high 50.7 yards per punt against No. 2 West Virginia. In fact, Laney averaged over 40 yards per punt in all but one game this season. This was Laney's sixth weekly conference award of his career.
This is the 11th MAC West POTW selection of the season for the WMU program, giving the Broncos six Special Teams POTW selections and at least one selection in successive weeks for the third time this year.
