CLEVELAND, Ohio - Seniors Maria Jilian and Casey Rost, two of the most successful guards to ever come through Western Michigan University ended their careers at WMU with a 64-59 loss to No. 6 Toledo on Wednesday night in the quarterfinal game at the 2006 MAC Tournament in Cleveland.
The Broncos were the No. 2 seed coming into the tournament after earning an automatic bye. WMU ended its season with a 14-14 overall record and 11-5 in the MAC. With the win Toledo improved to 11-17 overall and 4-12 in league play.
Rost and junior Carrie Moore each had a game-high 19 points. Moore also earned her seventh double-double of the season with 11 boards on the night. Jilian added five points, five assists and six steals just four shy of the MAC all-time steals record. Junior Ashley Owens also had double digits with 12 points.
Both teams struggled from the floor but the Rockets shot 40.7 percent while the Broncos only shot 28.8 percent.
The game was looking good for the Brown & Gold as they jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead in the opening minutes of play. Rost knocked down two 3-pointers and Moore also added a trey to the Broncos lead.
Toledo then proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to come within three points of WMU with 10:54 left in the first half. The Rockets then chipped the Broncos lead to one (15-14) with just over seven minutes to play.
Owens hit a jumper and made two free throws to help build WMU's lead back up to five (19-14) with 5:35 left on the clock.
The half ended with WMU leading Toledo by six (27-21).
Poor shooting in the second half hindered the Broncos as they lost their lead to the Rockets with 13:01 left in the game.
The Rockets remained in control of the game until WMU managed to tie it at 35-35 at the 9:22 mark and then again when it counted with just nine seconds left Owens lay-up sent the game into overtime.
Toledo's shots would fall in the extra period allowing them to get the win and advance to the semifinal game on March 10 against No. 22 Bowling Green.
