Jilian Scores 1,000th Point In Broncos 62-55 Loss At Ball State

KALAMAZOO, Mich - The Western Michigan University women's basketball team fell to Ball State University (62-55) on Saturday night in Worthen Arena.  The Cardinals managed to snap the Broncos five-game league win streak with the victory.

 

The Broncos fall to 12-12 on the season and 9-4 in the MAC while the Cardinals improved their overall record to 14-9 and 8-5 in league play.

 

Junior Carrie Moore managed a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.  Senior Casey Rost also had 19 points on the night while classmate Maria Jilian finished the night with 11 points.

 

In the opening minutes of play the Broncos won the tip and Rost scored a quick jumper making it a 2-0 ball game.  Ball State then proceeded to go on a 13-0 run building a 13-2 advantage with 14:17 left in the first half.

 

Jilian broke the Cardinals streak after a lay-up and a free throw making it a 13-5 ball game at the 13:08 mark.  Back-to-back baskets from seniors Rost and Jilian cut BSU's lead to 14-9 with just over 11 minutes left.

 

With 3:54 left on the clock the Brown & Gold continued to trail Ball State, 22-14. 

 

The Broncos offensive woes led them to a 25-16 deficit at the half.  WMU only shot 26.1 percent from the field.

 

WMU managed to cut the Cardinals deficit to 25-20 after the break but BSU continued its hot hand building a 44-27 lead with 12:20 left in the game.

 

Jilian scored her 1,000th career point after a lay-up off the break at the 10:10 mark.  

 

With under a minute left in the game a 3-point basket from Rost cut Ball State's lead to 58-53 but time ran out on the clock and the Cardinals would walk away with the seven-point victory.

 

Western Michigan women's basketball continues league action when it hosts in-state MAC rival Eastern Michigan on Feb. 22.  The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in University Arena.
