KALAMAZOO, Mich. (Jan. 17) - Casey Rost scored 22 of her game-high 29 points in the first half to lead Western Michigan to a 78-65 triumph over Northern Illinois. The Broncos, who pulled even (2-2) in Mid-American Conference play, extended their win streak over NIU to six games.
Ron Stewart's club put on a shooting clinc for the University Arena crowd in the early going, sinking 12 of 13 shots to start the game. WMU shot 63.3 percent in the first half - including 9-of-14 from three-point range - to take a 50-27 lead into the locker room.
Rost showed the form that made her the 2004 MAC Player of the Year, hitting on 10-of-14 shots in 29 minutes of action. She is 14 point shy of becoming the school's all-time leading scorer.
“I felt extremely good about our performance, it was a great start,” said Stewart. “Casey was making her threes in the first half and she worked hard to get a few in the second half. Northern made some second half adjustments which caused us some frustration, but overall it was a good effort.”
NIU (6-9/2-2 MAC) lost its leading scorer, Stephanie Raymond, during a six-minute stretch in the second half after a collision on the court. She returned and finished with a game-high seven assists and 10 points. Teammate Mary Basic led the Huskies with 15 points.
Western Michigan (5-10) travels to Toledo Saturday for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Savage Hall.
