KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan University women's basketball team dropped its first road game in Mid-American Conference play to in-state rival Eastern Michigan (71-55) on Saturday night in the Convocation Center.
The Broncos dropped to 4-10 on the season and 1-2 in the MAC while Eastern Michigan improves to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in league play which is the best start in school history for the Eagles.
Junior Carrie Moore led all scorers with her 21-points for the Broncos while classmate Lindsey Brown added 10 points on the night.
WMU took a 4-2 lead with 18:08 left in the first period after two free throws from junior Amanda Parker. The Brown & Gold's last lead was 6-4 after a lay-up from Brown with 17:11 left in the half.
The Eagles used a 9-0 run to take a 13-6 lead with 12:10 left in the first half. WMU cut EMU's lead to four on two occasions but couldn't get any closer. The Eagles entered halftime with a 31-20 edge over the Broncos.
Senior Casey Rost was held scoreless in the first half for the first time this season.
The Eagles remained in control of the ball game in the second half despite the Broncos efforts. A WMU basket from Moore cut Eastern Michigan's lead to nine (50-41) with just under eight minutes left in the game. Moore would cut the lead again to nine after two free throws with 6:52 remaining. That would be as close as WMU would get as the Eagles went on to win the ball game, 71-55.
WMU women's basketball will continue MAC action when it hosts Northern Illinois on Jan. 18 in University Arena. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
