KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan University women's basketball team (1-4) earned its first victory of the 2005-06 season after defeating Detroit Mercy (2-5) (89-78) on Sunday afternoon in Calihan Hall.
Junior Lindsey Brown led the Bronco squad for the fourth game in a row after scoring a career-high 27 points while adding her second double-double of the year after pulling down 12 rebounds. Junior Carrie Moore also had a double-double on the day with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Other high scorers for the Brown & Gold were senior Casey Rost who had 16 points and freshman Tiera DeLaHoussaye who finished with 13.
Moore made a free throw at 15:21 in the second half to give the Broncos a 47-46 lead over Detroit. WMU continued to control the ball game the rest way.
Rost knocked down a free throw to build the Broncos lead to 13 (78-65) at the 3:18 mark.
Detroit came to within five points of the Broncos with 1:46 left in the game but free throws down the stretch from DeLaHoussaye and junior Shaylen Jackson secured WMU's 89-78 victory.
Jackson made her first start of the season in the second half and played the full 20 minutes. She added eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and one block to the Bronco win.
The Broncos rallied off three straight baskets in the opening minutes of the game to take an 8-0 lead over Detroit. WMU trailed by as many as six (27-21) with 7:45 left in the half. The Brown & Gold went on an 8-0 run sparked by free throws from Brown to regain a 29-27 lead over the Titans with four minutes left on the clock. Detroit's late run with just under two minutes left gave them a 42-37 edge at the half.
WMU women's basketball will continue its road swing when it travels to Cleveland State on Dec. 11. The game is slated for 3:00 p.m.
