RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico - Senior Casey Rost scored a game-high 22-points in the Broncos near upset (69-65) to Virginia Tech in the Caribbean Classic on Monday afternoon.
The Broncos fall to 3-5 on the season while the Hokies remain undefeated with a 9-0 overall record.
Rost shot 56 percent from the field (9-of-16) and junior Carrie Moore was the only other Bronco to record double digits after scoring 14 points. Junior Shaylen Jackson was one-point shy of scoring double figures after adding nine points.
The Hokies scored seven straight points in the opening minutes of the ball game. Rost scored a 3-pointer to put the Broncos on the board at the 17:24 mark.
Virginia Tech proceeded to go on an 8-0 run building its lead to (15-3) with 14:06 left in the first half. WMU trailed by as many as 15 (21-6) in the first half but cut the lead to within nine (32-23) at the 1:39 mark after back-to-back baskets from Rost.
Rost shot a blazing 70 percent in the first period and scored 17 points. WMU entered the half trailing the Hokies (42-34).
The Broncos trailed in the second half by as many as 22-points. A 3-pointer from Rost with 5:39 left in the game sparked an 13-0 run for the Broncos to cut the Hokies lead to (62-51) with 4:04 remaining.
A free throw from sophomore Amanda Parker at the 3:15 mark cut Virginia Tech's lead to eight (63-55). The Brown & Gold rallied back to come within four (67-63) with 1:13 left on the clock.
WMU made it a 2-point ball game (67-65) after a lay-up from freshman Tiera DeLaHoussaye with just 19 seconds left on the clock.
The Hokies would make two free throws with seven seconds left to secure the 69-65 victory.
WMU women's basketball remains in action at the Caribbean Classic when it plays Louisville on Tuesday, Dec. 20. The game is slated for 4:30 p.m. EST.
