Detroit ? Western Michigan battled back and forth with its intra-state counterpart, but when all was said and done, the Broncos emerged victorious, 44-36, over Eastern Michigan to improve to 6-3 and 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The victory ensures the first winning season for the Brown & Gold since 2000.
Western Michigan built a 37-17 lead midway through the third quarter, but a Dwayne Harrison eight-yard run and 25-yard touchdown reception for Travis Lewis left the Broncos with a 37-36 lead and Eastern Michigan still having an extra point to attempt. Eagles head coach Jeff Genyk decided to go for the two-point conversion instead and failed, giving WMU the ball back with a little over six minutes to play and that precious one-point lead.
Prior to the dramatics of the fourth quarter, the Broncos dodged a bullet in the closing moments of the first half. Clinging to a three-point lead and Eastern at the Broncos' four-yard line, the defense came through again for WMU as C.J. Wilson intercepted the ball at inside the three-yard line and returned to near midfield. Western Michigan not only maintained its 20-17 advantage, the Broncos added to it. Nate Meyer kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to send the Brown & Gold to the locker room with a 23-17 edge. It was Wilson's second pick of the season. The redshirt freshman had a pick-six against Virginia to open the season.
The first half opened with a bang as each team scored on its first possession. The Eagles capped a 65-yard drive with a Matt Bohnet to Eric Deslauriers six-yard touchdown. Deslauriers finished with 14 catches for 166 yards and the score. A. J. Bennett also recorded a 100-yard receiving day for the Eagles with 13 catches for 122 yards. The Broncos answered back with a 10-play, 78-yard drive, which resulted with Tim Hiller hitting Tony Scheffler in the corner of the end zone from 14 yards out. Scheffler had five catches for 35 yards and two scores in the first half alone. It is the first multi-touchdown game of the senior tight end's career. Hiller (23-of-31, 243 yards) threw four touchdowns on the day, the second time in his career the true freshman has tossed four scoring strikes in regulation.
Joe Chapple notched the second touchdown of his career. The junior was on the receiving end of a 43-yard Hiller pass that found him matched up in single coverage down the middle. A blocked extra point gave Western Michigan a 13-7 edge at the 2:37 mark of the opening quarter. EMU answered with an 11-play drive that chewed up 83 yards and was capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Bohnet to Christopher Graham for receiver's first-career touchdown. Graham would score again, this time from nine yards out late in the third quarter. The extra point gave the Eagles a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter. Graham. Bohnet had four touchdown tosses on the day to go along with 398 yards on 39-of-57 passing.
Trovon Riley busted across the goal line at the 9:39 mark of the third quarter for his sixth touchdown this season, giving Western Michigan a 30-17 lead. Riley rushed for 151 yards on 26 carries for his fourth 100-yard rushing effort of the season. On EMU's next drive defensive end Anthony Belmonte reminded everyone that the Bronco defense was not done making impact plays. Belmonte stripped the ball from Anthony Sherrell and Ameer Ismail recovered for WMU at Eastern Michigan's 23-yard line. Hiller connected with Brandon Ledbetter from nine yards out. The score gave the Broncos a 37-17 lead in the third quarter.
The game marked the inauguration of the Michigan MAC Football Championship sponsored by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. The championship is awarded to the team with the best record in the intra-season series among Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan. The Broncos and Chippewas square off at Waldo Stadium in the MAC Television Game of the Week on Nov. 12.
