KALAMAZOO (May 5) -- Western Michigan clinched the Mid-American Conference West Division title with a split against East Division leader Bowling Green in doubleheader action from Ebert Field Friday afternoon. The Broncos are 29-13 overall, 16-4 in the MAC.
WMU exploded for 13 hits in the nightcap, producing a 7-2 win with four runs in the second inning and three more runs in the third. Four WMU players collected multiple hits (Katie Niemi, Danielle Daughtry, Kristi Strange and Becky Bartosz) while Tricia VanDerSilk earned the win on the mound, allowing just one earned run.
"I was really pleased with the way we came back in the second game," said coach Kathy Leitke, who also led the Broncos to a MAC West crown in 2003. "Our offensive attack has been big for us in wins this year. We have one goal down and look to add to that list."
WMU is still in the running for the No. 1 seed for next week's MAC Tournament. The Broncos look to win out their final regular season games this Saturday (3 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.) against Toledo in Kalamazoo.
The BG series opener produced a tight defensive battle, as WMU's Krysten Shumaker (8 Ks) and BG's Hayley Wiemer tossed complete games in a 2-1 Falcon win.
WMU claimed a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Lauren Fuller's RBI single that brought home Daughtry. BG responded in its next at-bat, stringing back-to-back doubles to push two runners across.
