Coach Ship

Meredith Applin

Former Bronco Meredith Applin returned to Western Michigan on April 29, 2019, and serves as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator. She was hired as director of operations before being elevated in to assistant coach in August, 2019. She received her current title and added recruiting coordinator duties in January, 2020. Shipman was a four-year letterwinner for WMU women’s basketball from 2014-17.

During her first season as an assistant, in 2019-20, Applin helped the Broncos to an 18-13 overall record with a 10-8 Mid-American Conference mark to finish third in the league’s West Division. The 10 league wins, tied for the ninth most in program history, marked the program’s most since 11 in 2014-15.

The squad posted 10 home wins for the first time since the 2014-15 season, and just the fourth time since 2003. The Broncos lost just four home games by a total of 16 points. Three-point shooting aided the Broncos as they set the program record for threes made in a campaign with 225.

Individually, Applin oversaw a pair of All-MAC honorees as Breanna Mobley received second team accolades and Jordan Walker third team. During the season Mobley became the program’s career leader in rebounds (1,050) and set the WMU single-season record with 342 rebounds in 2019-20. Walker finished the year with 495 points, tied for the ninth most in a year in program history, and 66 threes, the 11th most by a Bronco during a season.

Applin was director of operations for the women's basketball team from April-August 2019. Her responsibilities included assisting in the day-to-day operations of the program, focusing on administrative duties, travel and logistics, film breakdown, community service coordination and summer camps.

She had spent the previous two seasons at Davenport University under former WMU assistant coach Rick Albro. With Applin on staff, the Panthers won 13 games and nine Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests. Davenport qualified for the GLIAC Tournament in 2018.

As a Bronco student-athlete, Applin finished ranked fourth in career three-pointers made (177), 11th in career assists (285) and 13th in career steals (159). An ace shooter, Applin tied for the third highest free-throw percentage (.814), stood eighth in highest three-point field goal percentage (.348) and holds the WMU single-game record for most three-pointers made in a game, drilling nine at Toledo on January 9, 2016.

Applin played 127 career games and started in all 32 contests as a junior and senior. She earned third team All-MAC honors following her final campaign. Additionally, she was a two-year team captain, two-time Academic All-MAC recipient, MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete and was voted WMU's Teammate Award recipient twice. Married in September of 2020 to Bryan Applin.
