Malone spent nine seasons on Sean Payton’s New Orleans Saints coaching staff, helping the Saints capture their lone Super Bowl title in 2009. He mentored Jimmy Graham while in New Orleans, helping to elevate Graham into an All-Pro-caliber player and one of the most productive tight ends in the NFL. In 2011, Graham became the first Saints tight end to have more than 1,000 yards receiving and in 2013, Graham led the league in touchdown catches (16) and the Saints in receiving yards (1,215).
Before his near decade in the NFL, Malone spent nine seasons at Michigan working as the offensive line coach (1997-2005) and the offensive coordinator (2001-2005). Malone was a member of the Wolverines’ 1997 National Championship team and a part of five Big 10 Championships, as well as eight New Year’s Day bowl games. The Wolverines produced 14 All-Big Ten selections and four All-Americans during Malone’s tenure and had back-to-back conference Player of the Year winners on offense (Chris Perry, 2003 and Braylon Edwards, 2004). Two of his lineman were recognized as the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year (Jon Jansen, 1997 and Steve Hutchinson, 2000).
Malone began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Arizona in 1983, before returning to his alma mater, Holy Cross, in 1985 to tutor the tight ends.
Malone served as offensive line coach, tight ends coach, and offensive coordinator at Bowling Green from 1986-1995, where he was a part of two squads to win Mid-American Conference Championships and participate in subsequent bowl games.
Malone spent the 1996 season as the offensive line coach at Boston College.
