Jeff Popovich was named Assistant Coach/Special Teams Coordinator by head coach Lance Taylor ahead of the 2023 season. He was then promoted to Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator/Co-Defensive Coordinator and Safeties Coach.
In his first season with the Broncos, WMU's kickoff team did not allow a return of more than 35 yards and an average of just 18.3 yards. The team had no punts blocked and just one field goal attempt blocked. Sophomore kicker Palmer Domschke went a perfect 35-for-35 on extra points.Â
Popovich has an extensive coaching resume and most recently spent three seasons as the Special Teams Coordinator at Georgia Tech, where he coached Pressley Harvin III, the Ray Guy Award winner for the nation's top punter in 2022. He was also a cornerbacks coach at Boise State and spent two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.Â
He got his start in coaching at the University of Miami as a graduate assistant in 2005. Popovich played defensive back for the Hurricanes before a brief professional football career.Â
