Whalen joins the WMU staff in 2022 after three years as the offensive line coach at Marian University. In 2020-21, Whalen coached a young group that featured one upperclassman on the starting offensive line, while freshmen tackles started on both sides of the line. In 2019, he coached All-American Tyler Lotz, and had four of five linemen earn All-Conference honors.

Whalen helped guide an offense that ranked No. 10 in passing offense per game in 2020-21, as well as the No. 20 offense in total yards per game. He led one of the top offensive lines in the NAIA in 2019, ranking second in the country in sacks allowed, just six for the entire season.

A North Central College football alumnus, Whalen coached two seasons at North Central, oversaw two All-Americans, and helped coach North Centrals’ first All-American First Team running back. Prior to North Central, he was the offensive line coach for two seasons at Aurora University.
