August Peters joined the Western Michigan staff in July of 2018 and serves as a defensive graduate assistant, working primarily with the team’s defensive line. Peters spent the 2018 campaign as a special teams quality control assistant before transitioning to his current position in July of 2019.

In his two years with the Broncos, WMU has tallied 13 wins and consecutive bowl appearances.

The 2019 defense had a breakout year, holding opponents to just 25.9 points per game to stand second in the Mid-American Conference. The mark was the best for the program since yielding 19.8 in 2016. Western Michigan finished the 2018 season ranked 10th in the league, surrendering 34.5 points per contest.

The Broncos also went from 12th in the league in pass efficiency defense (160.69) in 2018 to seventh (136.70). Sending pressure from all over the field in 2019, the Broncos finished third in the MAC in tackles for loss per game (6.5) and second in sacks per game (2.8).

Individually along the defensive line in 2019, junior Ali Fayad was named second team All-MAC. The Dearborn, Mich., native finished first in the league with 0.31 fumbles recovered per game and sixth nationally. He also checked in second in the MAC in tackles for loss per game (1.13) and sacks per game (0.50).

Linebacker Treshaun Hayward received second team All-America accolades from Sporting News, and was tabbed the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, after totaling 142 tackles, the third most in the country.

Before his arrival in Kalamazoo, Peters spent five months, from March-July of 2018, overseas in Prague, Czech Republic, serving as the special teams coordinator, co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach of the Prague Lions.

Peters graduated with an economics degree from Middlebury College in May of 2018. A three-year letterman for the Panthers’ football program, Peters played in 22 games. Middlebury recorded 18 victories during his three years.
