Western Michigan – Georgia State Game Notes
 
Pre-game:
  • First ever meeting between Western Michigan and Georgia State.
  • WMU’s final non-conference game of the season.
  • Second straight season WMU has played in a stadium that hosted the Olympic games after playing in USC’s LA Memorial Coliseum in 2017.
  • Team captains: senior RB Leo Ekwoge and senior OL John Keenoy.
  •  Broncos win the coin toss and will defer. WMU will kickoff to start the game.
 
First Quarter:
  • Junior LB Drake Spears records first career forced fumble. Sophomore DT Ralph Holley collects first career fumble recovery.
  • The Broncos entered this game ranked third in the nation for forced fumbles per game.
  • Freshman kicker Gavin Peddie makes good on third career field goal (24 yards).
  • Score: WMU 3, GSU 3
 
Second Quarter:
  • Sophomore TE Brett Borkse makes first career catch for a 17-yard touchdown
  • Junior DL DeShawn Foster records first career sack and first career forced fumble. Junior LB Alex Grace records first career fumble recovery.
  • Freshman kicker Gavin Peddie makes a career-long 38-yard field goal.
  • Junior WR Keishawn Watson makes his first TD catch of the season, eighth career.
  • Sophomore DB A.J. Thomas makes his second career interception, Broncos’ first INT of the season.
  • Score: WMU 20, GSU 9
 
Third Quarter:
  • Freshman WR Jayden Reed hauls in his second career touchdown, career-long 47 yards. Junior QB Jon Wassink’s third passing TD of the day.
  • Sophomore Ali Fayad forces a fumble (recovered by GSU), WMU’s third forced fumble of the game.
  • Redshirt senior RB Jamauri Bogan scores a 71-yard touchdown, WMU’s longest rushing TD of the season. Touchdown is Bogan’s 30th rushing TD of his career, moving into a tie for third place in school history with Robert Sanford (1997-2000).
  • Bogan reaches 100 yards rushing for the game, WMU’s second running back to do so this season. (LeVante Bellamy vs. Syracuse).
  • Score: WMU 34, GSU 15
 
Fourth Quarter:
  • Freshman WR Jayden Reed goes over 100 yards receiving for second time in his career.
  • Broncos have a 100-yard receiver and a 100-yard rusher for the second time this season (also vs. Syracuse)
 
Post Game:
  • Western Michigan’s first road win of the season, Broncos improve to 2-2 (both losses to Power 5 opponents).
  • WMU improves to 3-1 all-time against the Sun Belt Conference
  • WMU has two 100+ yard rushers for the first time since Oct. 7, 2017 at Buffalo (Jarvion Franklin, 176; LeVante Bellamy 131).
  • Broncos finish with 538 yards total offense, marking the third time in four games WMU has put up over 500 yards total offense.
  •  Broncos head to Miami (OH) next Saturday, Sept. 29 to open Mid-American Conference play. 3:30 PM ET kickoff, ESPN+
