Western Michigan at USC Game Notes – Sept. 2, 2017
  • This is the first game between a Mid-American Conference program and USC. It is WMU’s first game against a Pac 12 school.
  • It is the second time in the last three seasons WMU has opened against a top-5 ranked opponent. WMU opened the 2015 season hosting #5 Michigan State.
  • Game Captains: Caleb Bailey, Jarvion Franklin and Donnie Ernsberger
  • WMU wins the coin toss and defers.
  • Game time temperature – 98 degrees
First Quarter:
  • After suffering an ACL tear in game two of last season at Illinois, RSo. LeVante Bellamy returns and is today's starting RB.
  • WMU redshirt sophomore Jon Wassink is playing in his first career game and making his first career start.
  • Asantay Brown records a sack on USC QB Sam Darnold to force 4th down on USC's second drive of the game. Brown had 3.5 career entering this season.
  • Wassink completes his first career pass for 9 yards on his third pass attempt of the game.
  • Bogan 4-yard TD run to tie game at 7-7, capping 8-play, 59 yard drive … Bogan’s 25th career TD
  • Freshman kicker Josh Grant makes good on first career PAT attempt
  • K Derrick Mitchell records tackle on ensuing kickoff
  • 22-yard run by LeVante Bellamy, followed by 16-yard carry
  • Anton Curtis makes first career reception
Second Quarter:
  • First play of second quarter, Wassink 7-yard QB keeper gives WMU a 14-7 lead – 14:53
  • Eric Assoua with WMU's second sack of the day - a 9-yard loss - 7:56
  • 1:50 left Josh Grant first career FG attempt wide left
  • Darius Phillips interception, 20-yard return – Asantay Brown with the tip – 0:07 … Phillips 10th career interception
Third Quarter:
  • 9:11 – WR Keishawn Watson 27-yard throwback TD pass to QB Jon Wassink. First TD of any kind for Watson, first receiving TD for Wassink
  • 7:16 - Junior Sam Beal with a sideline interception - WMU now with two picks and two sacks against USC QB Darnold. Beal's first career INT.
  • Eric Assoua with a 7.0-yard tackle for loss
Fourth Quarter:
  • Darius Phillips returned a kickoff 100-yards for his fourth career return for a touchdown and the third touchdown return of 100 yards.
  • LeVante Bellamy’s run of 48 yards was the longest play from scrimmage for WMU. He hit 100 yards for the third time in his career.
  • Freshman quarterback Reece Goddard took his first career snap late in the fourth quarter.
