Western Michigan Drops Sunday Tilt at UIC

CHICAGO – The Western Michigan volleyball team wrapped up its weekend in Chicago with a 3-0 loss (25-18, 25-15, 25-23) at UIC on Sunday afternoon.

Annalise Patchett paced Western Michigan in both kills (11) and blocks (3), while also contributing six digs. Leah Richmond totaled 32 assists and Carley Piercefield collected a team-leading eight digs.
 
Holding a 13-12 edge in the first set, UIC ran off four consecutive points to extend its lead to 17-12. At 21-17, the hosts then put together a 4-1 stretch to close out the opening stanza.
 
In the second, the Flames tallied another four points in a row as part of a 6-1 stretch which helped build a 15-8 margin. The Broncos closed the gap to 17-11 before the hosts used a 6-2 run to increase their advantage to 23-13 and put the frame beyond reach.
 
UIC notched the first four points on the way to a 6-1 start in the third. The hosts held a lead of no fewer than three until WMU put together a late charge. Trailing 22-15, the Broncos used a 7-1 surge to draw to within one, 23-22. The Flames withstood the rally, and hung on to take the final set, 25-23, and seal the match victory.
 
Western Michigan wraps up non-conference play next weekend with a pair of matches in Milwaukee. The Broncos open the weekend with a neutral site matchup against St. Thomas on Friday at 3 pm.
