CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Western Michigan women's soccer team closed its non-conference schedule with a 3-1 loss at Xavier on Sunday afternoon.
Kaiya Stewart tallied the lone goal for the Broncos, while
Kate Sheridan stopped two shots in net.
FIRST HALF
Xavier applied pressure early and was rewarded by tallying the game's first goal in the third minute. WMU settled in from there and started to get some looks. In the 25th minute,
Tessa Fagerson nearly tied the game. She had three consecutive shots blocked in front of the net.
A little bit later,
Simone Sharpless and
Camryn Huhn had chances toward the net. Sharpless had her shot just miss the goal, and Huhn's shot was blocked away from trouble.
Despite that pressure, Xavier would add another goal to make it 2-0 late in the half. However, the Brown and Gold had a response, as Stewart buried a shot to bring the Broncos within one at the half.
SECOND HALF
Despite an early look from
Olivia Anderson, it would be Xavier striking first in the second 45 minutes of action. The Musketeers pushed their lead to 3-1 in the 50th minute. Sheridan was then able to make a big save in the 57th minute to keep the visitors within two.
A little bit later, the Brown and Gold earned three corner kicks. Xavier was able to push the ball away from trouble and maintain its lead in the 62nd minute. Later in the game, Sheridan kept things close with a strong save in the 78th minute.
Neither team would get a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes of play, and Xavier closed out a 3-1 victory.

The Broncos will open MAC play on Thursday afternoon at Ohio. The two teams are slated to play at 4 p.m.
