MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ava Kurczewski secured a MAC Championship in the 3K steeplechase to headline a great day for Western Michigan at the Outdoor MAC Championships. The Broncos sit in fourth place with 31 points after two days of competition.
Kurczewski won the race by more than 10 seconds, crossing the finish line in a time of 10:08.12. That moved her into second all-time in program history behind a former MAC Champion in the event in Kayla Schiera.
Lily Overton came in behind Kurczewski, securing sixth place with a time of 10:30.40. That elevated her to fourth in school history.
Madison Zarembski (10:55.52) and
Kaelin Hughes (10:59.29) were also great in the race. Hughes' time pushed her into 10th in program history.
Outside of the steeplechase crew,
Sierra Sommers and
Tess Van Dyk were able to put more points on the board in the shot put. Sommers finished third with a top mark of 14.86 meters. That moved her to sixth in school history. Van Dyk was eighth with a mark of 13.99 meters.
Lane Hagens also competed for the Brown and Gold, recording a throw of 13.38 meters.
Sandra Ferrari then scored in the long jump, collecting third place with a mark of 6.12 meters. That put six points on the board for WMU.
Laurine Elisa Marimon just missed out on scoring, placing ninth with a leap of 5.79 meters.
Anichka Malachi (5.53 meters) and
Layla Wallace (5.44 meters) also performed well in the event.
Outside of the scoring athletes, Western Michigan saw plenty more reach the finals in their respective events.
Mabinty Kebe advanced to tomorrow's 100-meter hurdles final, collecting the second best time in the prelims. She crossed the finish line in a time of 13.98. Ferrari and
Jade Celestine were just on the outside of the qualifying line, securing times of 14.32 and 14.45, respectively.
Soniya Jones then pushed herself into tomorrow's 100-meter dash final. She sprinted her way to a time of 11.67.
Laurie-Ann Desormes put together a strong race, just missing the cut with a time of 12.16. Finally,
Emma Henkel earned her spot in the 800 final by posting a time of 2:09.26. That time pushed her to eighth in school history.
Joy Evans wasn't too far behind, registering a time of 2:14.18.

The Broncos will wrap up competition tomorrow at the Briner Sports Complex at Ball State. WMU will kick things off with the discus at 9 a.m.
