MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan track and field team opened the Outdoor MAC Championships with some strong results, posting five points on the first day of competition.
Lillian Zelasko was sensational in the 10K, claiming fourth place with a time of 34:02.64. That put five points on the board for WMU and pushed her into second in program history.
Larissa McGrath was also strong, collecting a time of 36:53.58.
Outside of that,
Emma Henkel advanced to the finals in the 1500. Her time of 4:25.97 was good for second in the entire prelim and moved her to fifth in program history.
Rebekah Asselin was also strong in the event, as she just missed qualifying for the final with a time of 4:33.35.
Following that,
Mabinty Kebe led the field in the 400-meter hurdles. She advanced to Saturday's final with a time of 59.18.
Mickaliliah Vassell and
Jade Celestine were just outside the qualifying line, earning times of 1:02.39 and 1:03.89, respectively.
Then, in the javelin,
Katie Nichols just missed out on adding points to the board. She finished ninth with a top throw of 39.46 meters. She entered the competition as the No. 16 seed in the event. Her PR mark elevated her to fourth in program history.
Soniya Jones was next on the track, competing in the 200-meter dash. She concluded the race just one spot out of qualifying position, notching a time of 24.16.
Finally,
Sierra Sommers was able to produce a mark of 47.80 meters in the hammer throw. She was just a few meters short of putting points on the board for the Brown and Gold.

The Broncos will resume competition tomorrow afternoon, beginning with the shot put at 3 p.m. All the action is taking place at the Briner Sports Complex at Ball State.
