YPSILANTI, Mich. – Cooper Hums and
Avery Thielman each homered in a five-run, third inning to propel the Western Michigan baseball team to a 12-7 victory at Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

Both teams picked up a run in the first frame, with
Michael Maloney plating a two-out run for the Broncos, and EMU answering with an unearned tally in the home half.
Western Michigan then found its power stroke to regain the lead in the third.
Cooper Hums got the Brown and Gold started, launching a two-run homer for the second straight day. Later in the frame,
Avery Thielman added a three-run shot to make it 6-1.
Eastern Michigan countered with three of its own in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 6-4.
The score remained the same until the seventh, when Western Michigan picked up some insurance. With two outs,
Josh Polubinski delivered a pinch-hit, RBI single to bring Maloney in to score. After
Nolan Zajac was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
Tanner Mally ripped a double to left which plated two more to extend the lead to 9-4. Mally reached in five of his six plate appearances in the contest with a pair of doubles, two walks and a hit by pitch.
The Eagles pushed across three in the bottom of the eighth, but
DJ Thompson was able to get out of the frame with WMU still in front, 9-7.
Western Michigan then answered with three of its own in the ninth, with Polubinski driving in two with a single and Mally going the other way for an RBI double.
Turner Doran came on in the bottom of the ninth and retired the Eagles in order to seal the victory for the Broncos.
Sam Carlisle collected his fourth win of the season for the Brown and Gold after giving up three earned runs in his 5.0 innings of work.
The Broncos and Eagles close out their three-game weekend series with a rubber match on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 1 pm on
ESPN+.
