KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team wrapped up its home schedule with a 74-71 overtime loss to Ball State on Tuesday night.
Jayden Brewer made it three consecutive double-doubles for the Brown and Gold, celebrating his Senior Night with 20 points and a career-high tying 13 rebounds.
Justice Williams netted a game-high 22 points for Western Michigan (10-20, 4-13 MAC).
Ball State (11-19, 6-11) used an eight-point burst to grab a 17-7 advantage just past the midway point of a low-scoring first half. The Broncos chipped away at the deficit in the last few minutes of the period to work the margin down to 25-22 at the break.
Western Michigan tallied the first five points out of the locker room to move ahead, 27-25, for the first time since the game's opening minutes. At 38-36, Brewer ran off seven consecutive WMU points to stretch the advantage to 45-38 with 10 minutes remaining. Ball State countered with eight in a row to begin a 14-2 surge to wrestle the lead away, 52-47.
The Broncos fought back, reeling off six straight points to regain a 53-52 edge. With the Cardinals back up by one, 56-55, with under a minute to go, Williams drained a three-pointer to put WMU in front, 58-56. Trailing by two in the final seconds, BSU made a layup to even the contest at 61-61 and send the game into overtime.
Ball State grabbed the first four points of the extra session to go back on top, 65-61. Western Michigan trimmed the gap to one multiple times, including in the final seconds. Trailing by three with just a few ticks remaining, a WMU three-pointer at the buzzer to try and send the contest into a second overtime was off the mark.
The Broncos connected on 23-of-56 (41.1 percent) of their field goal attempts for the evening, while Ball State went 29-of-62 (46.8 percent) from the floor.
