TOLEDO, OHIO/KALAMAZOO, MICH. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team split Mid-American Conference matches over the weekend, falling at Toledo on Friday and downing Ball State at home on Sunday.
WMU started off the weekend falling to the Rockets, 4-3. The Broncos started off strong taking the doubles points thanks to wins at No. 2 by
Frida Weijerman and
Marielou Baudouin and at No. 3 by
Julia Frazier and
Polina Khotko. Weijerman and Baudouin picked up a 6-3 victory against Jone Ibanez and Gaby Rondon, with Frazier and Khotko securing the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Anastasia Akuginova and Iva Jankovic.
Frazier pushed WMU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Annika Munson at No. 6. After Toledo got on he board with a win at No. 2, freshman
Ayana Yaguchi defeated Akuginova 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 5 to push the lead to 3-1. But from there, it was all Rockets, winning the final three singles matches to take the overall match.
The Broncos took the doubles point for the second time on the weekend in the 4-3 win over he Cardinals.
Polina Khotko and Frazier earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 over Sydney Hrehor and Asia Ting Fontana to take the advantage. Weijerman and Baudouin remained undefeated in dual matches after a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Alana Bristow and Gabriella Barrera to secure the point.
Sienna Osborne pushed WMU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Fontana. The Cardinals got on the board with a win at No. 6 by Jemima Williams-Phillips. Alana Bristow tied it up at 2-2 with a win at No. 1 over Glantz.
Audrey Smitek gave the lead back to the Broncos with a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5) win over Priyanka Rana at No. 2, but BSU countered with a win by Isabel Tanjuatco at No. 4 to square it all at 3-3.
Weijerman secured the match victory for he Broncos after a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-0), win over Sarah Shahbaz at No. 3.
Western Michigan is back in action on Friday at 12 p.m., hosting Bowling Green.
