KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team picked up its first Mid-American Conference win of the season on Sunday, defeating Northern Illinois 5-2 at NIU's Nelson Tennis Center.
The Broncos (10-5, 1-1 MAC) started off strong by earning the doubles. Freshman
Ayana Yaguchi and graduate student
Lola Glantz earned a quick 6-0 win at No. 1. The point was then claimed by
Frida Weijerman and
Marielou Baudouin after a 7-5 win over Irmak Budak and Jenna Horne at No. 3.
Singles opened with Nataly Ninova tying the match up at 1-1 after a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Sienna Osborn. The Broncos retook the lead, 2-1, after Weijerman defeating Lucia Yecora 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Senior
Audrey Smitek pushed the lead to 3-1 after a 7-5, 6-2 win over Theodora Kousiou at No. 3. The match-clinching point came from Glantz at No. 1. She defeated Budak 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 1. WMU's fifth and final point came from Yaguchi, winning 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Western Michigan is back in action on Friday at Toledo at 12 p.m. The Broncos then return home to host Ball State on Sunday at 12 p.m. Admission is free.
