KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team dropped its Mid-American Conference opener to Miami, 4-3, at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (9-5, 0-1 MAC) took the early advantage thanks to the doubles point.
Marielou Baudouin and Friday Weijerman picked up the first win, a 6-3 decision at No. 3 over Lovisa Valentinsson and Evelyn Risner. Miami squared it up after a win at No. 1, but
Lola Glantz and
Ayana Yaguchi sealed the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Nina Chavez and Maria Komar at No. 2 shortly after.
Audrey Smitek pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Valentinsson. Yaguchi then scored WMU's third and final point to make it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 over Risner. From there, the RedHawks chipped away at the lead. MU's first point was a win at No. 1 singles, followed by No. 2 to cut the lead to 3-2. The match-tying point came at No. 6, with the winner coming by Avery Voss at No. 4.
Western Michigan heads on the road for the first time in MAC play, taking on Northern Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
