ATHENS, Ohio – The Western Michigan men's basketball team opened the second half of Mid-American Conference play with a 91-71 loss at Ohio on Tuesday evening.
A trio of Broncos were in double-figures for the evening, with
Jayden Brewer's 20 points leading the way. Joining the senior in double-figures for WMU (8-14, 2-8 MAC) were
Jalen Griffith (19) and
Carson Vis (14). Vis' 14 points established a new career high.
Declan Peterson secured a team-leading six rebounds.
The contest was back and forth in the opening minutes before Ohio (13-11, 7-5) put together an 11-2 run to open up a 28-18 advantage just past the halfway mark of the period. At 31-22, the hosts ran off 11 in a row to increase the margin to 42-22. WMU answered with the next six, and the Bobcats took a 44-28 edge into halftime.
OU increased its cushion to 53-32 in the early stages of the second half. Western Michigan used a six-point spurt to close the gap to 53-38 with just over 16 minutes to play. The Broncos got as close as 74-60, but Ohio kept WMU at arm's length for the remainder of the evening.
Western Michigan connected on 27-of-60 (45.0 percent) of its field goals, while Ohio made 30-of-58 (51.7 percent) from the floor.
The Broncos step outside of conference play on Saturday to take on Texas State in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. Tip against the Bobcats is scheduled for 3 pm.
