Western Michigan Drops Heartbreaker to #21 Miami

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's basketball team took undefeated #21 Miami to the brink on Friday night, but the RedHawks made a basket with 0.4 seconds remaining to squeak out a 69-67 victory.

Jayden Brewer recorded his second straight double-double for the Broncos (10-19, 4-12 MAC), leading the way for the home team with 19 points and 11 rebounds. EJ Ryans and Justice Williams were also in double-figures for Western Michigan with 14 points apiece.

The Broncos got out on the front foot early, grabbing an 8-2 edge in the opening minutes and getting their first 10 points of the night from Brewer. At 12-7, Miami (29-0, 16-0) tallied six consecutive points to move ahead for the first time, 13-12. The two teams traded the lead back and forth for a few minutes, until the RedHawks took their largest lead of the night, 26-23, with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Western Michigan then blanked the visitors over the final three-plus minutes and ran off seven in a row to take a 30-26 advantage into the locker room.

Western Michigan used a 6-2 burst at the beginning of the second half to boost its cushion to 36-28. The RedHawks chipped away and eventually got even at 49-49. The Broncos immediately responded with eight consecutive points to get the margin back to eight, 57-49, with 8:40 on the clock. Moments later, Carson Vis took one to the basket to give WMU its largest lead of the night, 59-50.
